Best laser sight: seven choices by fit and mounting format
Our starting recommendation for a separate red rail-mounted laser is the Crimson Trace CMR-201. It clamps to M1913 Picatinny or Weaver rails, Crimson Trace's legacy guide rates it at 5 mW peak, Class 3R, and it switches with a tap, so one unit can move between a railed pistol and a long gun. Choose the CMR-206 instead for the same rail format and rating with a green 515 to 532 nm beam. Choose the LG-443 for the GLOCK 42/43 listing when you want the laser on from your grip: the OpticsPlanet listing says its Instinctive Activation turns the laser on when the pistol is held in the natural firing grip, and Crimson Trace rates it at more than four hours. The LaserMax Guide Rod keeps the laser inside its named Gen 4 GLOCK configuration, at the cost of a 1-hour rated runtime.
For a revolver grip choice, our pick is the LG-305; for an IR-equipped rifle setup, compare the DBAL-A3, which adds an IR pointer and IR illuminator in an 8.3 oz unit. The E-Series Green is our model-specific green candidate. This guide covers separate laser devices; if your purchase requires illumination too, use our best laser light combo comparison.
The pick labels are our editorial recommendations. Shopper ratings belong to OpticsPlanet and are listing-wide. Check price and availability on OpticsPlanet.
How we reviewed: we compared the OpticsPlanet specifications and review records with opened manufacturer pages and manuals. Individual reviewer comments are attributed to their listing, and model or revision differences are kept separate. See our methodology.

Best red rail-mounted option: Crimson Trace CMR-201 Rail Master Red
Carded manufacturer part number: 01-9690-1
around $120exact price on OpticsPlanet
The OpticsPlanet carded CMR-201 row carries MPN 01-9690-1. Our recommendation is to start here for a separate red rail-mounted laser: it clamps to M1913 Picatinny or Weaver rails, so one unit can move between a railed pistol and a long gun. Crimson Trace's legacy CMR-201 guide rates it at 5 mW peak, 620 to 670 nm, Class 3R. Crimson Trace's updated CMR-201 page identifies SKU 01-3000226. We do not transplant that page's runtime or adapter count into this priced row.
Pros
- The OpticsPlanet listing describes user-adjustable windage and elevation for CMR-201.
- Crimson Trace's legacy CMR-201 guide describes tap-on and tap-off activation.
Cons
- Runtime and adapter count depend on the revision: Crimson Trace's legacy guide says over four hours and 4 inserts, while the updated 01-3000226 page says 2 hours and 3 rail fit adapters. The priced row does not say which generation it is.

Internal Gen 4 GLOCK option: LaserMax Guide Rod for GLOCK
Carded manufacturer part number: LMS-1161-G4; GLOCK 26/27/33 Gen 4 only
around $260exact price on OpticsPlanet
The OpticsPlanet LMS-1161-G4 row is a red internal guide-rod laser for GLOCK 26, 27 and 33 Gen 4. We would compare this when the internal format is your priority: it replaces the original recoil spring guide, and the OpticsPlanet listing says you keep your holster and rail light. LaserMax states accuracy within 1.5 inch point of impact at 10 yards. Match the generation and named models first; the wider GLOCK listing is not a compatibility promise for every GLOCK.
Pros
- The OpticsPlanet listing places the LaserMax laser in the guide rod.
- The OpticsPlanet listing describes deliberate activation through an ambidextrous takedown-lever switch.
Cons
- LaserMax rates the runtime at 1 hour, the shortest published runtime among these seven picks, and the unit fits only the named Gen 4 GLOCK models.
Key specifications

Green rail-mounted option: Crimson Trace CMR-206 Green
Carded manufacturer part number: 01-4620-1; black
around $170exact price on OpticsPlanet
The OpticsPlanet CMR-206 carded row is the green 01-4620-1 model. We would compare it with the red Rail Master when green is your buying priority: Crimson Trace's legacy CMR-206 guide gives the same 5 mW peak, Class 3R rating and the same rail format, with a 515 to 532 nm green beam instead of red. Keep its legacy guide separate from the updated green product page, which identifies a different generation.
Pros
- The OpticsPlanet listing describes M1913 Picatinny or Weaver accessory-rail fit for CMR-206.
- Crimson Trace's legacy CMR-206 guide lists one 1/3N 3V lithium battery.
Cons
- Crimson Trace's legacy guide rates the runtime at over two hours, so green here does not come with a longer runtime than the red Rail Master's legacy figure of over four hours.
Key specifications
| Laser | Green, 5 mW peak, 515 to 532 nm, Class 3R (Crimson Trace legacy CMR-206 guide) |
|---|---|
| Mount | M1913 Picatinny or Weaver rail (OpticsPlanet listing) |

GLOCK 42/43 option: Crimson Trace LG-443 Laserguard
Carded manufacturer part number: LG-443; red; GLOCK 42/43 listing
around $120exact price on OpticsPlanet
The OpticsPlanet LG-443 row is the red Laserguard for GLOCK 42 and 43; Crimson Trace's own page also lists the G43X and G48. We would compare it when a model-shaped trigger-guard laser is the fit you want. Its front Instinctive Activation turns the laser on from your normal firing grip, where the rail lasers here need a tap. Crimson Trace rates the battery life at more than four hours.
Pros
- Crimson Trace describes front Instinctive Activation for the LG-443.
- The OpticsPlanet LG-443 listing describes trigger-guard mounting.
Cons
- The shaped housing ties it to the named GLOCK models, and the quoted reviewer found it limits holster options.
Key specifications

J-Frame round-butt grip option: Crimson Trace LG-305 Lasergrips
Carded manufacturer part number: LG-305
around $300exact price on OpticsPlanet
Crimson Trace lists LG-305 for Smith & Wesson J-Frame round-butt revolvers. Our recommendation is to compare this when a grip replacement is the form you want: the laser lives in the grip, activates from the front of it, and Crimson Trace rates it at 5 mW peak, 633 nm, Class 3R. The grip is part of your purchase, so choose it for the documented fit and feel rather than simply for a laser attachment.
Pros
- Crimson Trace describes grip replacement and front Instinctive Activation for LG-305.
- Crimson Trace describes rubber overmold over a polymer base for LG-305.
Cons
- Grip replacement commits you to that grip format, and Crimson Trace's fit notes exclude polymer-framed Bodyguard models.
Key specifications
| Laser | Red, 5 mW peak, 633 nm, Class 3R (Crimson Trace) |
|---|---|
| Fit | Smith & Wesson J-Frame, round butt (Crimson Trace) |
| Fit exclusion | Crimson Trace's LG-305 fit notes exclude polymer-framed Bodyguard models. |
| Mount | Grip replacement (Crimson Trace) |
| Controls | Front Instinctive Activation (Crimson Trace); master on/off switch (OpticsPlanet listing) |

Visible and IR rifle option: Steiner DBAL-A3
Carded manufacturer part number: 9008; 9008 black; green visible laser
around $1,800exact price on OpticsPlanet
The Steiner DBAL-A3 listing includes a visible green laser, IR pointer and IR illuminator. We would shortlist it when IR equipment is actually part of your requirement: Steiner rates the visible laser under 5 mW (Class 3R), the IR pointer under 0.7 mW (Class 1) and the IR illuminator under 4 mW (Class 3R). It serves a different buying decision from a compact visible pistol laser. Keep the 9008 row separate from other DBAL variants and from the DBAL-D2 review.
Pros
- Steiner identifies 9008 as the black, green DBAL-A3 configuration.
- Steiner specifies a QD HT mount for the DBAL-A3.
Cons
- Steiner lists it at 3.7 x 2.7 x 1.7 in and 8.3 oz with its battery, so we would not buy the IR package to fill a compact-pistol role.
Key specifications
| Visible laser | Green, under 5 mW, Class 3R, 520 nm plus or minus 3% (Steiner) |
|---|---|
| IR pointer | Under 0.7 mW, Class 1, 850 nm (Steiner) |
| IR illuminator | Under 4 mW, Class 3R, 830 nm (Steiner) |
| Power | Steiner lists a CR123A battery for the 9008 DBAL-A3; runtime more than 3 hours. |
| Size and weight | 3.7 x 2.7 x 1.7 in; 8.3 oz with battery (Steiner) |
| Controls | One activation switch: tap for momentary, tap twice for 5 minutes on; high and low power modes (OpticsPlanet listing) |
| Mount | QD HT mount for Picatinny rails |
| Warranty | 2 years (Steiner) |
Model-specific green option: Viridian E-Series Green
Carded manufacturer part number: 912-0071; Ruger LCP MAX; black
around $130exact price on OpticsPlanet
The priced E-Series row is Ruger LCP MAX MPN 912-0071. Our recommendation is to compare this when you want a green, model-specific option: it is the only green trigger-guard laser here, and Viridian's LCP MAX table lists a 1/3N battery and a Lifetime Limited warranty. Pick your actual firearm's SKU instead of assuming the full listing's fit list describes one universal unit. Other fit options on this listing carry 940-prefixed part numbers; we did not confirm their package or revision.
Pros
- The OpticsPlanet listing identifies green laser color for the E-Series.
- The listing includes separate E-Series options for Ruger LCP MAX, Taurus GX4 and Springfield Armory Hellcat.
Cons
- We found no published laser class, output, runtime or switch description that we could tie to the priced LCP MAX row, so its spec column is the thinnest here.
Key specifications
| Laser | Green (OpticsPlanet row) |
|---|---|
| Class and output | Not published for this row |
| Mount | Trigger guard (Viridian model family) |
| Fit | Ruger LCP MAX standard factory frame; not the LCP MAX RG380 with Magpul EHG grip (Viridian) |
| Battery | 1/3N (Viridian LCP MAX table) |
| Warranty | Lifetime Limited (Viridian LCP MAX table) |
| Exact maker match | The opened Viridian family page did not expose a confirmed maker MPN for the priced 912-0071 row. |

How to choose a laser sight
Published output will not separate most of these picks. Crimson Trace rates all four of its lasers here at 5 mW peak, Class 3R (the two Rail Masters by their legacy guides), and Steiner rates the DBAL-A3's visible laser under 5 mW, Class 3R. That is five of seven picks at the same published output class. What actually differs is the mount (rail clamp, trigger guard, grip, internal guide rod or rifle QD mount), the activation and the runtime, so choose in that order.
Activation: tap, grip or lever
The two Rail Master lasers use tap-on, tap-off controls, and both legacy guides add a five-minute auto shutoff. The LG-443 and LG-305 use front Instinctive Activation, which the OpticsPlanet LG-443 listing describes as turning the laser on when the pistol is held in the natural firing grip. The LaserMax unit uses an ambidextrous switch in the takedown lever that the OpticsPlanet listing calls deliberate on/off activation. On the DBAL-A3, the OpticsPlanet listing describes one activation switch: tap for momentary, tap twice for five minutes on. If you want the laser on whenever you grip the gun, the grip-activated Crimson Trace units are the fit; if you want it on only when you decide, look at the tap and lever designs.
Runtime: published figures range from 1 hour to more than four
LaserMax rates its guide rod at 1 hour, Crimson Trace's legacy guide rates the CMR-206 at over two hours, Steiner rates the DBAL-A3 at more than 3 hours, and Crimson Trace rates the LG-443 at more than four hours. We found no published runtime for the LG-305 or for the priced E-Series row.
Revision comes before the spec comparison
The priced CMR-201 MPN is 01-9690-1, while the opened current maker page identifies 01-3000226. The two generations publish different figures: the legacy CMR-201 guide says over four hours and 4 inserts, and the updated page says 2 hours, 3 rail fit adapters and a minimum of 1 1/16 in from the recoil lug. The OpticsPlanet listing's own fit note asks for more than 1.125 in from the front of the trigger guard to the nearest recoil lug. Because the priced row does not say which generation it is, our table leaves the CMR-201 runtime out and you should measure your rail before ordering. The same split applies to the green Rail Master, whose updated page names SKU 01-3000227.
Keep E-Series model options separate
Viridian's LCP MAX family page excludes the LCP MAX RG380 with Magpul EHG grip. The priced row is the LCP MAX option. The listing's shared description and spec table sit next to Bodyguard 2.0 text, so we do not apply its measurements or battery to the LCP MAX row; Viridian's LCP MAX table lists a 1/3N battery.
What else to consider
Use the combo guide for a light-and-laser purchase. Our Steiner DBAL-D2 review covers that separate model, while best pistol light is the starting point when a light is your main requirement.
FAQ
What is the best laser sight?
Our starting recommendation for a separate red rail-mounted laser is the CMR-201: it clamps to M1913 Picatinny or Weaver rails and Crimson Trace's legacy guide rates it at 5 mW peak, Class 3R. Choose the CMR-206 for the same rail format in green, the LG-443 for grip activation on GLOCK 42/43, or the DBAL-A3 if you need IR.
Is a green laser more powerful than a red one in this guide?
Not by published output. Crimson Trace's legacy guides rate both the red CMR-201 and the green CMR-206 at 5 mW peak, Class 3R. The difference is wavelength: 620 to 670 nm for the red unit and 515 to 532 nm for the green one.
Does the LaserMax card fit every GLOCK?
The priced LMS-1161-G4 OpticsPlanet row names GLOCK 26, 27 and 33 Gen 4 only. Check the named model and generation instead of treating the GLOCK listing as universal.
Is the priced CMR-201 the current replacement SKU?
The card prices MPN 01-9690-1. Crimson Trace's opened updated product page identifies 01-3000226. We keep their revision-specific runtime and adapter claims separate: the legacy guide says over four hours and 4 inserts, the updated page says 2 hours and 3 rail fit adapters.
Which Viridian E-Series model is priced here, and does it fit the Magpul EHG version?
The card prices the Ruger LCP MAX 912-0071 listing row. Viridian's LCP MAX family page excludes the LCP MAX RG380 with Magpul EHG grip. Select the separate SKU for your actual firearm before comparing another option's package.
Where should I compare units that add a light?
Use our best laser light combo guide for that purchase. Here the recommendations focus on separate laser devices and their mounting formats.
