How we evaluate optics
We want every pick on this site to be something you can sanity-check. Here is exactly how our guides are put together and what each conclusion is based on.
Research-based vs hands-on
Most guides are research-based roundups: we compare published specifications, owner feedback, warranty terms and pricing across reputable retailers. When we have used a product ourselves, we say so explicitly and describe what we did. We never claim a hands-on test we did not perform.
What we weigh
- Optical quality signals (glass, coatings, clarity reports) for the price tier.
- Build: waterproofing, durability, weight, warranty.
- Fit for the stated use case (hunting, birding, target, golf, marine).
- Value: performance relative to price, not just the lowest number.
Our limits
Specifications and prices change, and lighting and eyesight vary between people. Treat our guides as a strong starting point, confirm current details on the retailer page, and buy from sellers with a clear return policy.
Independence
We earn affiliate commissions on some links (disclosure), but payouts never decide our rankings. We include products we would not buy when it helps you compare.
