How distance turns a miss into an angle A single angle from the muzzle covers a bigger offset the farther the target is. One MOA covers about 1.05 inches at 100 yards and 5.24 inches at 500 yards; one MRAD covers 3.6 inches at 100 yards and 18 inches at 500 yards. The correction in MOA or mils is the miss divided by what one unit covers at that range. What one MOA and one MRAD cover at each distance

Worked example (do it by hand)

Say your group prints 6 inches low at 200 yards. One MOA is 2.09 inches at 200 yards, so 6 divided by 2.09 is about 2.9 MOA up. On a 1/4 MOA turret that is roughly 11 clicks up (2.9 divided by 0.25). In mils, one mil is 7.2 inches at 200 yards, so 6 divided by 7.2 is about 0.83 mil up, which is about 8 clicks on a 0.1 mil turret. Because the group is low, you dial the elevation turret up to bring impact up to aim.

Four clicks. A 1/4 MOA turret moves your point of impact one quarter MOA per click, so four clicks equal 1 MOA, which is about 1 inch at 100 yards, 2 inches at 200 yards and so on. To dial 3 MOA you would turn 12 clicks.

Which way do I turn the turret to move my point of impact?

Move the point of impact toward the center of the target. If your group is low, dial the elevation turret up; if it is high, dial down. If the group is left, dial the windage turret right; if it is right, dial left. Most turrets are marked UP and R (right) with arrows, and the calculator on this page tells you the direction based on where your shot landed.
