Radian Model 1 complete upper review: a premium AR-15 upper that comes assembled
Our verdict: 4.4/5. The Radian Weapons Model 1 Complete Upper Receiver is a finished upper for the AR-15 platform (the retailer lists it for the AR-15), not a stripped receiver and not a rifle. Radian builds it on a billet 7075-T6 receiver with a match grade 416R stainless steel barrel and its own extended M-LOK handguard, which has an integrated stainless steel anti-rotation pin into the upper and fastens to the barrel nut with four steel cross bolts. Radian says it comes assembled with its Raptor-SD ambidextrous charging handle and lists an Enhanced Black Nitride M16 bolt carrier group, so unlike the Aero M4E1 complete uppers we cover, it is not a barrel-and-handguard assembly you still have to fill. Owners praise the fit and finish. The catches: it costs several times what Aero's .300 Blackout complete upper does, the owner record is only seven reviews, and one owner found it would not fit their ambidextrous lower. Finishing the rifle? Our best AR stock guide compares the stocks.
OpticsPlanet shoppers rate it 4.7/5 across 7 reviews. The row we price is R0444, Radian Brown, .300 AAC Blackout with a 9 inch barrel, at around $1,850. The same listing sells 24 rows in five colours and five barrel lengths; the 5.56-class rows cost more. Check price and availability on OpticsPlanet.
How we reviewed it: a research-based review built from Radian Weapons' own complete upper product page, the retailer's listing for the Model 1 complete upper (all 24 rows), and all seven owner reviews that listing shows. Where the retailer and Radian disagree, or the retailer disagrees with itself, we print Radian's wording or nothing. Research leads we could not confirm on Radian's site were left out. We have not built or fired this upper ourselves; the score is our editorial opinion and owner ratings are shown attributed to their source. See how we evaluate.
What the Model 1 complete upper is
Radian describes it as “precision CNC machined as a matching semi-monolithic receiver set”. The upper receiver is cut from billet 7075-T6 aluminum with M4 feed ramps, and Radian says it is assembled with the dust cover, the handguard anti-rotation pin, a lightweight forward assist and the Raptor-SD ambidextrous charging handle, which Radian calls suppressor-optimized. The handguard is Radian's proprietary extended aluminum design with Magpul M-LOK slots; Radian says it attaches to the barrel nut with four steel cross bolts coated in black nitride, and the upper and handguard are sprayed with Radian Cerakote for a matching finish.
The barrel is match grade 416R stainless steel, which the retailer's spec table also lists. Radian gives the chambering as “.223 Wylde or 300 BLK”, threaded 1/2 x 28 for .223 Wylde and 5/8 x 24 for 300 BLK. It is a direct impingement upper, and Radian matches the gas system to the barrel: pistol-length on the 9 inch 300 BLK, carbine-length on the 10.5 inch, mid-length on the 14.5 and 16 inch, and intermediate-length on the 17.5 inch. Radian's default muzzle device is a Dead Air KeyMo flash hider, and the retailer's feature list says the item comes with one.
Radian also lists a “Sub-MOA Accuracy Guarantee w/ Black Hills Match Grade Ammunition”. It sits in the specification list for the Model 1 complete upper as a whole, with no calibre or barrel length named. The page we read gives no test distance, shot count or claim procedure for that guarantee, so treat it as Radian's promise rather than a measured figure.
The row we price: 9 inch .300 Blackout, Radian Brown
The listing fronts R0444, and Radian's own data confirms that SKU as 300 BLK, 9 inch barrel, Radian Brown. The retailer lists it with a pistol-length gas system and 5/8x24 muzzle threads. The listing's other 9 inch .300 Blackout rows come in Radian Grey, OD Green, Flat Dark Earth and Black at the same price; the 10.5, 14.5, 16 and 17.5 inch 5.56-class rows each cost more, the 17.5 inch rows most of all.
Twist rate: we print none. The retailer's row data and an answer in its questions section give two different twist figures for this 9 inch barrel, and the specifications on Radian's complete upper page do not state one. Confirm it with the retailer or Radian before you pick a bullet weight.
A 9 inch barrel is under 16 inches. We do not give legal advice on how such an upper may be configured; check federal, state and local law before you buy or build, and check the retailer page for shipping restrictions to your state.
What is in the box, and what is not
- Included, per Radian: the upper receiver with dust cover, lightweight forward assist and handguard anti-rotation pin; the barrel; the extended M-LOK handguard; the Raptor-SD ambidextrous charging handle; and, on Radian's specification list, an Enhanced Black Nitride M16 bolt carrier group.
- Muzzle device: a Dead Air KeyMo flash hider by default. Radian says a Dead Air KeyMo muzzle brake replaces the flash hider “where required by law”.
- Not included: a magazine (retailer spec table), and of course the lower receiver.
- Check before ordering: the retailer's feature list names the charging handle but not the bolt carrier group, so confirm the bolt carrier group with the retailer.
What owners say
We could read all 7 reviews the listing counts. Six are five stars and one is three stars, and all seven say they would recommend it. Six carry the retailer's Verified Owner tag. The dated reviews run from January 2021 to April 2025, so the record is more than a year old. The reviews are shared by all 24 rows; none says it is about a 9 inch .300 Blackout upper, while four mention a barrel length: 10.5 inch once, 14.5 inch twice and 16 inch once.
Five reviewers praise the fit, finish or build quality, and even the three-star review lists quality components as a pro.

The two catches owners report
Ambidextrous lowers. One verified owner says the upper would not go on a Daniel Defense ambidextrous lower: the forward assist hits the lower's right side bolt catch, so the takedown pin will not line up. The same reviewer says the bolt catch on Radian's ADAC-15 lower does not sit up like a typical one, and lists the con as “Will not match up to every AMBI lower”. Another reviewer reports no play on Radian's ADAC lower, and one who swapped it in for a DDM4V7 upper says it fits perfectly. If your lower has a right side bolt catch, check clearance before you buy.
“The forward assist hits the right side bolt catch.”
Deuce (NV), verified owner, June 2023, via OpticsPlanet
“I swapped out my DDM4V7 upper with this 10.5 Radian. I'm impressed. Fits perfectly.”
Oscar (FL), verified owner, April 2025, via OpticsPlanet
Muzzle device timing on a 14.5 inch upper. The only three-star review is about the 14.5 inch upper, where the muzzle device is pinned and welded. The reviewer says it was not timed, so the pin and weld mark ends up in a random visible spot and attaching a suppressor becomes a guessing game. Their review was voted helpful by 18 of 19 readers. It describes the 14.5 inch row, not the 9 inch row we price.
“At this price-point, I expect better.”
JN (MN), three-star review, via OpticsPlanet
One more owner lists a single con: the upper is “on the heavier side”. Neither Radian's complete upper page nor the retailer's spec table gives a weight, so we print none.
Radian Model 1 or a budget .300 Blackout complete upper?
The price gap is the whole question. Aero Precision's M4E1 10 inch .300 Blackout complete upper, which we cover in our Aero M4E1 review, sells for around $550 on its ATLAS R-ONE row. That listing does not list a bolt carrier group, and five of its reviewers point out that it does not include one; Radian's specification list for the Model 1 names one, along with the Raptor-SD charging handle. On Radian's own list the Model 1 also brings a billet 7075-T6 receiver, a match grade 416R stainless barrel, the anti-rotation pin handguard interface and a sub-MOA accuracy guarantee. Whether that is worth several times the money is a judgement only you can make; the Aero is the value pick, the Radian the finished premium one.
Trade-offs, plainly
- It is expensive: even the lowest-priced rows, the 9 inch .300 Blackout rows including the one we price, cost several times Aero's .300 Blackout complete upper.
- The owner record is small: seven reviews, the newest dated April 2025, and none tied to the 9 inch .300 Blackout row.
- One owner could not fit it to a Daniel Defense ambidextrous lower because of forward assist clearance.
- One owner reports an untimed pinned and welded muzzle device on the 14.5 inch row.
- The retailer's listing disagrees with itself on the twist rate, and Radian's page does not settle it.
- One owner calls it on the heavier side, and no weight is published on the pages we read.

Warranty
Radian's complete upper page says the Model 1, “like every Radian product, is guaranteed for life.” The page we read does not spell out the terms, so ask Radian what the guarantee covers before you rely on it. We found no editorial award to claim for this upper, so we claim none.
Should you buy it?
- Buy it if you want a premium, finished AR-15 upper that Radian lists with a bolt carrier group and an ambidextrous charging handle, and the price does not put you off.
- Check first if your lower is ambidextrous with a right side bolt catch, and confirm the twist rate and the bolt carrier group with the retailer.
- Skip it if you are building on a budget: the Aero M4E1 complete uppers cost a fraction as much, though you supply the bolt carrier group and charging handle.

FAQ
Does the Radian Model 1 complete upper come with a bolt carrier group and charging handle?
Radian says the upper is assembled with its Raptor-SD ambidextrous charging handle, and its specification list for the complete upper names an Enhanced Black Nitride M16 bolt carrier group. The retailer's feature list names the Raptor-SD charging handle but does not mention a bolt carrier group, so confirm it with the retailer before you order. No magazine is included (retailer spec table: Magazine Included: No).
What is the twist rate of the 9 inch .300 Blackout Model 1 upper?
We do not print one. The retailer's listing gives two different twist figures for this barrel (one in its row data, another in an answer in its questions section), and the specifications on Radian's complete upper page do not state a twist rate. Ask the retailer or Radian to confirm it before you choose bullets.
Will the Radian Model 1 upper fit my lower?
The retailer lists it for the AR-15. Owner reports are mixed on one point: a verified owner says it would not go on a Daniel Defense ambidextrous lower because the forward assist hits the right side bolt catch, and lists the con as "Will not match up to every AMBI lower". Another reviewer reports no play on Radian's own ADAC lower, and one who swapped it in for a DDM4V7 upper says it "Fits perfectly." If your lower has a right side bolt catch, check clearance first.
What configurations does the Radian Model 1 complete upper come in?
The retailer's listing has 24 rows: a 9 inch .300 AAC Blackout barrel with a pistol-length gas system, and 10.5, 14.5, 16 and 17.5 inch 5.56-class barrels, in Radian Black, Grey, Brown, OD Green and Flat Dark Earth. Radian lists carbine-length gas for the 10.5 inch, mid-length for the 14.5 and 16 inch and intermediate-length for the 17.5 inch. The row we price is R0444: Radian Brown, .300 AAC Blackout, 9 inch barrel.
Is the Radian Model 1 upper any good?
OpticsPlanet shoppers rate it 4.7 out of 5 across 7 reviews, and all seven say they would recommend it. Five praise the fit, finish or build. The two specific complaints are a muzzle device on a 14.5 inch upper that the reviewer says was not timed before it was pinned and welded, and the ambidextrous-lower clearance problem. Seven reviews is a small record, and the newest dated one is from April 2025.
