Aero Precision M5 vs M5E1 review: two .308 uppers, one big decision about handguards
Our verdict: 4.5/5 for the M5E1. Aero Precision's M5E1 .308 Enhanced Upper Receiver is a forged 7075-T6 upper with the handguard mounting platform forged into the receiver. It comes with the port door and forward assist installed and the barrel nut in the box, and Aero says a free-floated handguard then mounts with just 8 screws. The catch is the one owners raise most: Aero says it works only with its M5 Enhanced Handguards and “will not work with other AR10/308 handguards.” If you want a different handguard, buy the standard M5 .308 Assembled Upper instead: a conventional threaded upper with a DPMS High Profile (.210) tang, no barrel nut in Aero's included list, lighter on Aero's figures (14 oz against 16.96 oz) and the cheaper of the two. Both are .308-class uppers for Aero's M5 platform, not AR-15 parts, and neither includes a barrel, handguard, bolt carrier group or charging handle. Building an AR-15 instead? OpticsPlanet shoppers rate the M5E1 4.6/5 across 38 reviews and the M5 4.9/5 across 43. The rows we price are Anodized Black on both: M5E1 APAR308504AC at around $200 and M5 APAR308503AC at around $160. Each listing also sells FDE Cerakote, Kodiak Brown and OD Green rows. Check price and availability on OpticsPlanet.
How we reviewed it: a research-based review built from Aero Precision's own product and warranty pages, the retailer's listings for the M5E1 and M5 uppers, and every owner review those two listings show (38 and 43). Where the retailer and Aero disagree, we print Aero's wording. Research leads we could not confirm on Aero's site were left out. We have not built or fired these uppers ourselves; the score is our editorial opinion and owner ratings are shown attributed to their source. See how we evaluate.
M5 or M5E1: the short answer
- Choose the M5E1 if you are happy to use Aero's M5 Enhanced Handguards and want the barrel nut included and a handguard that mounts with 8 screws.
- Choose the M5 if you want to pick your own barrel nut and handguard, or want the lighter and cheaper receiver. Check that the handguard suits a DPMS high-profile upper.
- Choose neither for a 5.56 AR-15: both are .308-class uppers. Aero's AR-15 equivalent is the M4E1, reviewed here.
What the M5E1 Enhanced upper is
Aero describes the M5E1 as “a one-piece design combining the handguard mounting platform with the upper itself.” Aero says the handguard mounting surface and the upper are the same forging, and that the design brings a free-floated handguard down to 8 screws and adds lightening cuts to save weight. Aero's feature list adds M4 feed ramps, .2795 takedown pin holes and laser engraved T-marks. It ships assembled with the dust cover and forward assist installed, plus a barrel nut that Aero says to torque to 65 ft-lbs with an armorer's wrench. Aero lists it at 16.96 oz, machined from 7075-T6 forged aluminum, and says it accepts standard DPMS .308 components.
Owners who paired it with the Enhanced handguard like the installation. Four reviewers say the handguard or barrel was easy to install or remove, and one prefers the 8-screw mounting to designs that rely on tension.
The row we price is Anodized Black, APAR308504AC. The listing also sells FDE Cerakote, Kodiak Brown and OD Green rows; in the retailer's model list the Kodiak Brown and OD Green rows are named “Enhanced Stripped Upper Receiver”, while the listing's package contents say the port door and forward assist come installed. We did not read Aero's pages for those two colours, so confirm what ships with them before ordering one.
“I just prefer the security of 8 screws holding everything in place.”

The handguard lock-in, with dates
Aero is explicit: “The M5E1 Upper Receiver is specifically designed to be used with our M5 Enhanced Handguards. It will not work with other AR10/308 handguards.” Seven M5E1 reviewers bring this up. Three say the Enhanced handguards were hard or impossible to find, one says they still needed to find a 15 inch Enhanced rail, two wish there were more handguard choices, and one lists needing the special Enhanced handguard as a con. All seven reviews are dated between November 2020 and December 2021. No review from 2022 onward repeats the supply complaint, and we make no claim about how easy the handguards are to find today; check before you commit to the M5E1.
“It would be a 5-star product if the handguards were available.”

“i only wish they had a larger selection of handguards!”

Why owners rate the M5E1 4.6
We could read all 38 reviews. Thirty are five stars, four are four stars, three are three stars and one is one star; 34 of the 38 say they would recommend it. The pool is shared by every colour row the listing sells, and six reviewers mention an FDE finish. The newest review is dated December 27, 2025.
The praise is about fit and finish, and ten reviewers describe pairing it with an Aero lower; one more advises using Aero's enhanced lower with it. Two reviewers note that the barrel nut came with it.
“I did not expect to receive the included barrel nut.”
AJ (FL), verified owner, via OpticsPlanet
Four reviewers report a problem with the unit they received: a barrel that fit loosely (three stars), an upper that would not accept a charging handle (the only one-star review, from a reviewer who says it is not their first Aero M5), an ejection port cover that would not close and had to be replaced, and a scratched bore cover. Each report describes one unit; four reports in 38 reviews is a small number, not a measured defect rate.
“Great design, awful tolerance.”
Hobbybuilder (MA), three-star review, via OpticsPlanet
“will not accept a charging handle in it.”
Thomas (AR), one-star review, via OpticsPlanet
The standard M5 .308 Assembled Upper
Aero describes the M5 as “precision machined to accept standard .308 components”. It is the conventional design: Aero lists barrel nut threads of 1 7/16"-16, a DPMS High Profile (.210) tang, M4 feed ramps, .2795 takedown pin holes and laser engraved T-marks, and says it includes the port door and forward assist. Aero's included list names only the receiver, so you supply the barrel nut along with the barrel and handguard. Aero lists it at 14 oz, machined from 7075-T6 forged aluminum, and says it accepts standard AR .308 components.
The row we price is Anodized Black, APAR308503AC. The listing also sells FDE Cerakote, OD Green and Kodiak Brown rows. The retailer's names for the OD Green and Kodiak Brown rows include barrel words (22in, 1-8 twist, 5/8x24 thread) even though no barrel is in the package, and the OD Green row name says Low Profile. Aero's own page for the OD Green anodized M5 (APAR308631AC) lists the DPMS High Profile (.210) tang. We did not read Aero's Kodiak Brown page, so confirm that row's details before ordering it.
Besides fit with Aero lowers, owners make two points that matter for the M5 or M5E1 choice. First, it is not the M5E1: one reviewer, who left two reviews, stresses in both that it is not the enhanced version, and in one says parts that fit the enhanced, handguards and barrel nuts among them, will not work on this upper. Second, three reviews point out that it is a DPMS high-profile upper, and two of them tie it to handguard choice.
“Nothing that fits the enhanced will work on this upper”
Patrick Obrien (MT), verified owner, via OpticsPlanet
“Note that it is the high profile upper rail so not all freefloat handguards will fit.”
Sniper (CA), via OpticsPlanet
“Just remember the style is DPMS high when pairing it with a handguard.”
Steve (MN), verified owner, via OpticsPlanet
We could read all 43 reviews: 41 are five stars, one is four stars and one is three stars, and the three-star featured review is positive in its text. Eleven reviewers describe fitting it to an Aero lower. On other lowers the record is mixed: one reviewer paired it with a DPMS LR308 lower and the featured negative review with a CMMG 308 lower, while another found it fit an Aero lower but not a different brand. Two reviewers like a set screw used in place of a roll or drift pin; one of them says it is the forward assist pin. Two reviews describe units bought as factory demos, and the newest listed review is dated February 10, 2025, so this record is well over a year old.
“The upper receiver fit perfectly on my Aero lower but not on my SO lower.”
William (AZ), via OpticsPlanet
“I appreciate the replacement of the roll pin with a set screw pin.”
Taylor Smith (GA), verified owner, via OpticsPlanet
Apart from the lower-fit report above, the few complaints are minor and mostly cosmetic: one reviewer wanted a nicer coating on the dust cover, one found the finish a little off colour, and one says an FDE upper and a different brand's FDE lower were different shades.
“The dust cover could have been coated a little nicer”
Bill (FL), verified owner, via OpticsPlanet

Specifications are from Aero Precision's product pages for the Anodized Black M5E1 and M5. The retailer's listings give the M5E1 a Gun Model line of AR-15 and give the M5 a line about standard AR15/M16 components; Aero's pages describe both as its .308 M5 platform, and an answer labelled as Aero Precision in the M5E1 listing's questions says “The M5 is an AR308 pattern rifle.” Owner reviews on each listing are shared across its colour rows. Check the retailer page for shipping restrictions to your state before you order.
Trade-offs, plainly
- Both are receivers, not uppers you can shoot: barrel, handguard, bolt carrier group and charging handle are extra, and the M5 also needs a barrel nut.
- The M5E1 ties you to Aero's M5 Enhanced Handguards, by Aero's own statement. Seven reviewers raised the handguard question in 2020 and 2021.
- The M5E1 is the heavier and more expensive of the two on Aero's figures and the retailer's prices.
- Four M5E1 reviewers report a defect on their unit (loose barrel fit, charging handle would not fit, port cover would not close, scratched cover).
- The M5's high-profile tang narrows handguard choice; two reviewers warn about it when choosing a handguard.
- The M5 owner record is almost all five stars but no listed review is newer than February 2025.
Warranty
Aero's warranty page describes a Limited Lifetime Manufacturer Warranty that applies to any firearms, parts and accessories it manufactures, “whether or not you are the original purchaser”, and continues “as long as we manufacture and support it.” We found no editorial award to claim for either upper, so we claim none.
Should you buy it?
- Buy the M5E1 if you are building on an Aero M5-pattern lower, plan to use an Aero M5 Enhanced Handguard, and value the included barrel nut and 8-screw handguard mounting.
- Buy the M5 if you want to choose your own barrel nut and handguard, or want the lighter, cheaper receiver, and you will check that your handguard suits a DPMS high-profile upper.
- Skip both for a 5.56 build and look at the Aero M4E1 instead.

FAQ
What is the difference between the Aero Precision M5 and M5E1 upper?
The M5E1 has the handguard mounting platform forged into the receiver; Aero calls it a one-piece design and says it works only with its M5 Enhanced Handguards, and it ships with its barrel nut. The M5 is a conventional threaded upper: Aero lists barrel nut threads of 1 7/16"-16 and a DPMS High Profile (.210) tang, and Aero's included list names only the receiver (no barrel nut), so you pick the barrel nut and handguard. Aero lists the M5E1 at 16.96 oz and the M5 at 14 oz.
Will the M5E1 work with other handguards?
Not according to Aero. Its M5E1 page says: "The M5E1 Upper Receiver is specifically designed to be used with our M5 Enhanced Handguards. It will not work with other AR10/308 handguards." The standard M5 is the one to choose if you want another brand of handguard. One M5 owner adds that handguards from the M5E1 system do not fit the M5 either.
Is the Aero M5 an AR-15 upper? Will it work for 5.56?
No. The retailer files the M5E1 under Gun Model AR-15 and gives the M5 a line about standard AR15/M16 components, but Aero lists both as its M5 platform in .308: the M5E1 accepts standard DPMS .308 components and the M5 accepts standard AR .308 components. An answer labelled as Aero Precision on the M5E1 listing says the M5 is an AR308 pattern rifle and points 5.56 builders to the M4E1. For an AR-15, see our Aero M4E1 review.
What comes with the Aero M5 and M5E1 upper receivers?
The M5E1 comes with the port door and forward assist installed and a barrel nut, which Aero says to torque to 65 ft-lbs with an armorer's wrench. The M5 comes with the port door and forward assist, and Aero's included list names only the receiver. Neither includes a barrel, handguard, bolt carrier group or charging handle.
Are the Aero M5 and M5E1 uppers any good?
Owners rate both highly. OpticsPlanet shoppers give the M5E1 4.6 out of 5 across 38 reviews and the M5 4.9 out of 5 across 43 reviews. The M5E1 praise centres on fit with Aero lowers and the easy barrel and handguard installation; the complaints are about the Enhanced handguard requirement and four reports of individual defects. The M5 record is almost all five stars, but its newest listed review is from February 2025.
