Vortex Micro3X 3x22 Magnifier review: mount height, compatibility and eye relief
Our verdict: 4.5/5. The Vortex Micro3X is a compact Micro 3x magnifier on its own quick-release flip mount, made to sit behind an AR red dot or holographic sight at a standard co-witness height. Vortex's manual puts it 1.46 inches (37 mm) from the top of the base to the optic's center without the riser plate (absolute co-witness) and 1.57 inches (40 mm) with it (lower 1/3), and says it can be mounted to flip to the right or the left. Vortex backs it with its unlimited, unconditional VIP lifetime warranty. The trade-off is eye relief: Vortex lists 2.64 inches, and 26 of the 142 OpticsPlanet reviews we read raise the eye relief or eye box as a drawback. Vortex's larger 3x is covered in our Vortex VMX-3T review.
Skip it if:
- your 1x sight is a prism scope: Vortex says the Micro3X will not work with prism scopes;
- your dot sits at another height: Vortex says it is only compatible with red dots at 37 mm or 40 mm;
- you need a forgiving eye box, or want it far back on the rail: 6 reviewers say the quick-release lever crowds the charging handle, 5 of them with it far back.
OpticsPlanet shoppers rate it 4.6/5 from 145 reviews (the retailer's figure, read 15 October 2026; our 4.5 is a separate editorial score). It sells for around $230; confirm the current price and availability on the retailer page.
What the Micro3X is
The Micro3X, Vortex's Micro 3x magnifier, is a fixed 3x that sits behind a 1x red dot. Flipped into line, it magnifies the dot and the target; flipped to the side, you are back to the red dot alone. Vortex sells it as one SKU, V3XM, under the name “Micro3X Magnifier”; OpticsPlanet lists it as the Vortex Micro 3x22mm Magnifier. Vortex's manual describes it as “Next level 3x magnification versatility when you need it for your red dot or holographic sight in an ultracompact, lightweight, and optically-crisp package.”
It is not new. Vortex's own Micro3X page is in the Internet Archive from 22 September 2019, and the earliest of the reviews we read is dated September 20, 2019. Vortex publishes no launch date, so we give none.

Vortex sells the Micro3X with an integrated quick-release flip mount and a riser plate in the box. Its manual puts the magnifier 1.46 inches (37 mm) from the top of the base to the optic's center without the riser plate, the absolute co-witness height, and 1.57 inches (40 mm) with it, the lower 1/3 height, and says it can be mounted to flip to the right or the left. Vortex lists 3x, a 22 mm objective, 2.64 inches of eye relief, 38.2 ft of view at 100 yards, 2.9 inches of length and 9.6 oz with the flip mount, and covers it with its unlimited, unconditional VIP lifetime warranty. Of the 142 OpticsPlanet reviews we read, 26 raise the eye relief or eye box as a drawback, and 6 say the quick-release lever crowds the charging handle.
Pros
- Two heights from one mount and one riser plate: 37 mm (absolute co-witness) or 40 mm (lower 1/3), per Vortex's manual
- Vortex says it can be mounted to flip to the right or the left
- Quick-release rail mount, rubber lens covers and two screw sets in the box (Vortex)
- Vortex VIP warranty: unlimited, unconditional, lifetime
Cons
- Vortex lists 2.64 inches of eye relief; 26 of the 142 reviews we read raise the eye relief or eye box as a drawback
- 6 reviewers say the quick-release lever crowds the charging handle, 5 of them with the magnifier far back on the rail
- Only two heights: Vortex says it is only compatible with red dots at 37 mm or 40 mm
- Not for prism scopes, per Vortex
- 4 reviewers report trouble with the mount's tension adjustment, two of them because it took a tool they did not have
Best for: an AR owner whose red dot or holographic sight sits at 37 mm or 40 mm and who wants a compact 3x on a quick-release flip mount that can be set to flip either side, and can live with a short eye relief.

Mount height and compatibility: 37 mm or 40 mm
This is the question most buyers need answered. Vortex's manual: “With the included Flip Mount and Riser Plates, there are two height options for mounting the Micro3x Magnifier behind a red dot on AR platforms.” Both are measured from the top of the base to the optic's center, and each uses its own set of screws:
| Setup (Vortex manual) | Height, base to optic center | Co-witness |
|---|---|---|
| Flip mount alone, Absolute Co-Witness Screws | 1.46 in (37 mm) | Absolute |
| Lower 1/3 Riser Plate between magnifier and flip mount, Lower 1/3 Co-Witness Screws | 1.57 in (40 mm) | Lower 1/3 |
Vortex's compatibility wording comes in three places. Its product page: “The Micro3x Magnifier will work with any of our red dots. The Micro3x will not work with prism scopes.” Its manual, under troubleshooting: “It will only be compatible with red dots with heights of 1.46" (37mm) and 1.57" (40mm).” and “Note: The Micro3x Magnifier is not compatible with prismatic scopes or magnified riflescopes.” The manual's opening line names holographic sights alongside red dots. Vortex's product page carried the same “red dot or holographic sight” line in the copies we read from 22 September 2019 to 14 February 2024; the copies we read from 22 February 2025, 15 April 2025 and 2 August 2025 no longer do. Vortex names no specific red dot models for the Micro3X, so the figure to match is your own sight's height on its mount.
The reviews show what reviewers put in front of it. Of the 142 we read, at least 17 describe running it with a holographic sight: at least 10 with Vortex's Razor AMG UH-1 and at least 5 with an EOTech. Others name a Vortex SPARC (9), a Holosun (5), a Vortex StrikeFire (5, see our Vortex StrikeFire II review), a Vortex Crossfire (4), an Aimpoint (3) and a Trijicon MRO (3).
“the height match perfect”
FELIX P. (FL), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, November 2022, with a Holosun HS510C
Height does not suit every setup. Three reviewers found it a little low for them, two of them even with the riser plate installed:
“it seems to be a little short when trying to line up that 1/3 co-witness”
eric (FL), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, August 2022
One Verified Owner writes that “you can request that they send you a 1.93 spacer plate”; that is the owner's report. Vortex's Micro3X page and manual list only the 37 mm and 40 mm heights, and the 1.93 inch riser plate is part of the box of Vortex's Micro6X.
Prism sights. Vortex's wording comes first: the Micro3X will not work with prism scopes. Two reviewers report otherwise for their own rifles. One writes “It does work with a PA 1x prism”; the other, who paired it with an “slx 1x”, writes “some say it won't work but it did”. These are owner reports, not a recommendation.
Rails. Vortex's manual says the flip mount “is designed for mil-spec 1913 Picatinny rails. If the rail is not to 1913 spec, it may not fit.” Two reviewers say the quick-release mount does not fit the rail of a Ruger PC9 carbine, one of them in a one-star review.
“on Rugar PC9, the rail is too big for the mount”
RITPA (NY), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, February 2020
If the dot is not centered. Vortex's manual expects it: “the dot may seem off-center while viewing through the Micro3x. This will not affect the point of impact.” The dot-centering screws can move the dot until it looks more centered, and the manual says the Micro3X does not require any special sight-in.

Vortex figures are from its current Micro3X page, its Micro3X manual (M-00246-1) and its parts diagram (version 2, dated 05/30/2023), read 15 October 2026. Two figures moved on Vortex's own page: the copies we read from 22 September 2019 to 14 February 2024 list 9.55 oz and 7.28 degrees, and the copies we read from 22 February 2025, 15 April 2025 and 2 August 2025 list 9.6 oz and 7.3 degrees. OpticsPlanet's specification table still shows 9.55 oz, 7.28 degrees and 2.6 in of eye relief, and adds values Vortex does not publish for the Micro3X: a 7.33 mm exit pupil, a -2.5 to 2.5 dpt diopter range, a 0.86 in width, a 47.75 mm height and machined aluminum. We list them here as the retailer's, not as Vortex specs. The retailer's 47.75 mm is not the 37 mm or 40 mm mount height above, and its 7.33 mm exit pupil equals our own arithmetic of a 22 mm objective at 3x.
Eye relief and eye box: the main trade-off
Vortex's product page lists 2.64 inches of eye relief and its manual rounds it to 2.6 inches. The manual is plain about the class: “Magnifiers have an inherently short eye relief, and you may be too far away or too close to the magnifier.” It is the most argued-over point in the reviews. Of the 142 we read, 26 raise the eye relief or eye box as a drawback, 18 of them tagged Verified Owner; 12 call it good or decent, and 5 are mixed.
“the eye relief on the magnifier is terrible”
optout (MO), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, May 2021, a three-star review
“my nose touches the charging handle to have a full picture”
Kyle (KS), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, August 2022, with a Vortex Razor AMG UH-1
The fix reviewers describe is moving the magnifier back on the rail, and at least 3 say it has to sit at or near the very back. That is where a rear backup sight and the charging handle get in the way: 5 reviewers say it conflicts with a rear backup sight or does not work well with one, while 3 say a backup sight still works with it.
“But I really wouldn't recommend this magnifier if you're planning on running BUIS.”
Nick (AL), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, June 2021, a four-star review
The other side of the record is real too:
“the Micro 3X has a generous 2.5"-4" eye relief (literally holding it up to my eye, alongside a ruler!)”
Manny (SC), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, December 2020
Which way it flips, and the quick-release lever
Vortex is explicit here. Its manual: “The Micro3x Magnifier does not come mounted to the flip mount. This allows the user to select their preferred mounting height. The Micro3x Magnifier can be mounted to flip to the right or the left based on shooter preference.” To use it, the manual says to “apply direct pressure and flip the Micro3x Magnifier to the left or the right side (depending on mounting direction).”
In the reviews, 10 talk about the flip side, and 5 of them note it can be set to flip either way. Separately, 6 reviewers say it flips without pressing a button. Two reviewers mounted it, or advise mounting it, to flip right so both eyes stay open on the red dot alone, and a right-handed owner writes that turning the mount around cleared the charging handle but, flipped to the left, obscured two-eyes-open aiming.
“Easy to reverse for lefties.”
TarikhBey (AZ), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, April 2024
“I mounted mine to flip to the right side so I can still use both eyes when using just my red dot.”
DB Hardware Man (MS), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, June 2021
The rail mount is a separate part from the flip. Vortex's manual says to “depress the Lock Button and swing the Quick-Release Mount Lever 90 degrees to the open position”, and that the lever should close with moderate pressure using thumb or finger; closing tension is set with a flat-head screwdriver at the Adjustment Nut. The lever is the most specific complaint in the reviews: 6 reviewers say it crowds or gets in the way of the charging handle, 5 of them with the magnifier far back on the rail, and one more finds it too long. One of the three one-star reviews returned it for this reason.
“the qd lever gets in the way of the charging handle”
the Grither (LA), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, March 2025
On the mount itself, 6 reviewers say there is no play, wobble or rattle, and 4 are critical of it, from “just okay” to a reviewer who calls the metal very soft. Four report trouble with the tension adjustment: one found it set too tight on arrival, one received a previously opened unit with a stripped set screw, and two say it took a tool they did not have. One reviewer says the detent screw that sets the flip tension fell out after about 200 rounds and Vortex sent a new mount. Vortex's manual notes that there may be a very small amount of play within the flip mount and that this will not affect point of impact.
“No play in upright or flipped positions.”
Ron Williams (VA), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, January 2026, a four-star review
“the mount adjustment screw needs a specialty driver that is not included and not specified in the manual”
Ronin (NJ), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, October 2024, a four-star review
Build, sealing and warranty
Vortex's current page lists three features: “Fully Multi-Coated Lenses”, “Nitrogen Gas Purged”, described as “Gas purged and O-ring sealed for fogproof and waterproof performance in all conditions.”, and “Shockproof”, described as “Designed to withstand the highest levels of recoil and impact.” Vortex lists no material, no IP rating and no temperature range for the Micro3X. Its manual says all components are permanently lubricated and that no additional lubricant should be applied.
The VIP warranty is the strongest line on Vortex's page: “UNLIMITED. UNCONDITIONAL. LIFETIME WARRANTY.” Vortex's warranty page adds: “It doesn't matter how it happened, whose fault it was, or where you purchased it.” It also sets the limits: “The VIP ® Warranty does not cover loss, theft, deliberate damage, or cosmetic damage that does not hinder the performance of the product.” The Micro3X manual adds: “You do not have to register, save the box, or a receipt for the Warranty to be honored.” Three reviewers say Vortex sent them a replacement part, from a lost height shim to a new mount.
“they would send one out free of charge”
USAFgunner (UT), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, January 2024, after losing the height shim
What reviewers report (142 reviews)
We read all 142 reviews OpticsPlanet showed for the Micro3X, collected 15 October 2026, against the 145 the retailer counts: 103 five-star, 29 four-star, 6 three-star, 1 two-star and 3 one-star, dated September 2019 to October 2026, 105 of them tagged Verified Owner. Two reviews were posted twice, and one is a red dot review posted on this page by mistake, as its author says in a later review: the totals above include them; our theme counts count each double post once and leave the red dot review out. We counted the themes ourselves.
- Glass: at least 55 praise it as clear, crisp or sharp. 3 hold back: one says others have better glass, one calls it good, not great, and one sees a blue tint.
- Eye relief: 26 raise the eye relief or eye box as a drawback; 12 call it good or decent; 5 are mixed (see above).
- Quick-release lever: 6 say it crowds the charging handle, 5 of them with the magnifier far back; one more finds it too long.
- Flip: 10 discuss the flip side, 5 of them noting it can be set either way; separately, 6 say it flips without a button.
- Mount: 6 say there is no play, wobble or rattle; 4 report trouble with the tension adjustment.
- Backup sights: 5 say it conflicts with a rear backup sight or does not work well with one; 3 say a backup sight still works with it.
- Height: 3 reviewers found it a little low for their setup.
“The glass is insanely clear.”
John Hayes (CA), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, April 2024, with a T2
“Glass clarity is about what you expect from vortex (good, not great).”
Alex (ME), a Verified Owner, via OpticsPlanet, November 2021, a three-star review
The one two-star review says it does not appear to be 3x to that reviewer. The three one-star reviews concern a previously opened unit with a stripped tension screw, a Ruger PC9 rail it did not fit, and the lever crowding the charging handle.
Micro3X vs VMX-3T vs Micro6X
Vortex's Micro3X is not its VMX-3T, which Vortex lists as the “3X Magnifier”; our Vortex VMX-3T review covers that one. Vortex's own figures, side by side:

Vortex's Micro3X manual says it “shares the same footprint as an EOTech G33, Micro6x, and the Vortex® VMX-3T.” In short, by Vortex's figures: the Micro3X is the shortest and lightest of the three, with more eye relief than the VMX-3T, a quick-release mount that can be set to flip either way and lens covers in the box; the VMX-3T has the larger 27 mm objective; the Micro6X doubles the magnification and halves the field of view. We have not reviewed the Micro6X, so we give it no score here. For other brands' 3x magnifiers, see our best red dot magnifier guide.
Trade-offs, plainly
- Eye relief is 2.64 inches by Vortex's figure, and 26 of the 142 reviews we read raise the eye relief or eye box as a drawback.
- 6 reviewers say the quick-release lever crowds the charging handle, 5 of them with the magnifier far back.
- On a crowded rail, a rear backup sight can be in the way: 5 reviewers say it conflicts with one or does not work well with one.
- Only two heights, 37 mm and 40 mm; Vortex says it is only compatible with red dots at those heights.
- Not for prism scopes, per Vortex.
- 4 reviewers report trouble with the mount's tension adjustment, two of them because it took a tool they did not have.
- Vortex's two documents give different torque figures for the mounting screws.

Should you buy the Vortex Micro3X?
- Buy it if your red dot or holographic sight sits at 37 mm or 40 mm on an AR, you want a compact 3x on a quick-release flip mount that can be set to flip either side, and you value Vortex's unconditional lifetime warranty.
- Skip it if you need more eye relief or a forgiving eye box, or plan to run it far back on the rail beside the charging handle.
- Skip it if your 1x sight is a prism scope or sits at another height: Vortex says it will not work with prism scopes and is only compatible with red dots at 37 mm or 40 mm.
- Look at the Vortex VMX-3T if you want Vortex's 3x with the larger 27 mm objective on a push-button flip mount.
FAQ
What height is the Vortex Micro3X, and does it co-witness?
Vortex gives two heights, both measured from the top of the base to the optic's center. Without the riser plate the Micro3X sits at 1.46 inches (37 mm), the absolute co-witness height; with the included Lower 1/3 Riser Plate between the magnifier and the flip mount it sits at 1.57 inches (40 mm), the lower 1/3 height. Vortex's manual says it will only be compatible with red dots at those two heights. In the reviews, 3 reviewers found it a little low for their setup even so.
Does the Micro3X work with an EOTech, a holographic sight or a prism scope?
Vortex's product page says the Micro3X will work with any of its red dots and will not work with prism scopes, and its manual says it is not compatible with prismatic scopes or magnified riflescopes. The same manual describes it as a magnifier for your red dot or holographic sight. In the reviews, at least 17 describe running it with a holographic sight, including at least 10 with Vortex's Razor AMG UH-1 and at least 5 with an EOTech. Two reviewers report it worked for them, one behind a PA 1x prism and one with an slx 1x; Vortex's own wording stands.
Can the Vortex Micro3X flip left or right?
Yes, per Vortex. Its manual says the Micro3X does not come mounted to the flip mount and can be mounted to flip to the right or the left based on shooter preference. In the reviews, 10 talk about the flip side, and 5 of them note it can be set to flip either way. Separately, 6 reviewers say it flips without pressing a button. 6 reviewers say the quick-release lever crowds the charging handle, 5 of them with the magnifier far back on the rail.
How much eye relief does the Micro3X have?
Vortex's product page lists 2.64 inches and its manual rounds it to 2.6 inches. Of the 142 reviews we read, 26 raise the eye relief or eye box as a drawback, 12 call it good or decent, and 5 are mixed. Vortex's manual says magnifiers have an inherently short eye relief.
What is the difference between the Vortex Micro3X and the VMX-3T?
Both are Vortex 3x magnifiers on a flip mount at 37 mm or 40 mm. By Vortex's figures the Micro3X has a 22 mm objective, 2.64 inches of eye relief, 2.9 inches of length and 9.6 oz with its flip mount, sits on a quick-release mount, can be set to flip right or left, and comes with rubber lens covers. The VMX-3T has a 27 mm objective, 2.2 inches of eye relief, 4.3 inches of length and 11.9 oz (Vortex does not say whether that includes the mount), and no lens covers in the box. Vortex says the Micro3X shares the same footprint as the VMX-3T.
How much does the Micro3X weigh with the mount?
Vortex's manual lists 9.6 oz with the flip mount and the riser plate at 0.1 oz. Its product page gives 9.6 oz without saying what is included. Vortex's own page, in the copies we read from 22 September 2019 to 14 February 2024, listed 9.55 oz, the figure OpticsPlanet's specification table still shows.
What comes in the box with the Vortex Micro3X?
Vortex lists the Micro3X Magnifier, a Quick-Release Flip Mount, a Lower 1/3 Co-Witness Riser Plate, Rubber Lens Covers, 2 Screw Sets, a 3mm Hex Tool and a Lens Cloth. The two screw sets match the two heights: Absolute Co-Witness Screws without the riser plate, Lower 1/3 Co-Witness Screws with it.
Does the red dot have to be centered in the Micro3X?
Not for point of impact, per Vortex. Its manual says the dot may seem off-center through the Micro3X and that this will not affect the point of impact, and that the dot-centering screws can move the dot until it looks more centered. The manual also says the Micro3X does not require any special sight-in: zero the red dot as normal.
