The best shoulder holster
Quick answer: the Galco Miami Classic II (around $250, Glock 19 row) is the best shoulder holster for most people carrying a compact or full-size pistol. Galco lists 1.5 in harness straps on a swiveling Flexalon back plate and an open-front horizontal carrier for two spare magazines, and OpticsPlanet shoppers rate it 4.7/5 across 44 reviews pooled over every version. The original Miami Classic (around $210) has the most reviews of any rig here. For a full-size pistol, the diagonal Galco Jackass hides a longer slide; the DeSantis New York Undercover is the lowest-priced horizontal rig; the vertical Bianchi X15 suits a snub-nose revolver; and the Galco Kodiak Hunter carries a scoped hunting revolver on your chest. Every pick here is leather. See which carry style suits your gun.
A shoulder holster puts the gun's weight on your shoulders instead of your belt, and it needs a cover garment: a jacket, an open over-shirt or a coat. The first choice is the carry angle, and the angle follows the gun. Every card names the exact row we checked and the guns that row lists, because each listing sells separate rows by gun, size, hand or color and pools its reviews across all of them. Every pick is leather: when we checked (September 2026), a search of the retailer we link to returned no Kydex shoulder holsters. If you would rather carry on the belt, see our best concealed carry holster picks.

Best shoulder holster overall: Galco Miami Classic II Shoulder System, Glock 19
Horizontal carry · card: MCII224, right hand, Tan · the orderable row names Glock 19 first, plus Glock 17, 22, 23, 26, 27, 31 to 35 and Stoeger STR-9 · the listing sells 41 gun, hand and color rows
around $250exact price on OpticsPlanet
The shoulder holster to start with if you carry a compact or full-size semi-auto such as a Glock 19. Galco describes the Miami Classic II as a refined, modernized version of its original Miami Classic, and lists 1.5 in wide harness straps, a full grain leather harness on a Flexalon swivel back plate, a harness that fits chests up to 56 in, and a silhouetted holster that takes several barrel and slide lengths. The gun rides level under your arm; two spare magazines ride level on the other side in an open-front carrier that Galco says gives a faster, more natural grasp when reloading. The box holds the holster, harness, magazine carrier and a set of harness fasteners. We card the right-hand Tan row whose orderable name starts with the Glock 19. 40 of the 42 reviews we could read recommend it, and reviewers carry it for long days, while driving and under a jacket. The costs: four of those reviews mention a tight fit or a break-in period at first, others say setup takes time and patience, one reviewer calls the plastic connector piece uncomfortable, and Galco itself notes that most fits are not compatible with red dot optics.
Pros
- 1.5 in harness straps, Flexalon swivel back plate, fits chests up to 56 in (Galco)
- Open-front horizontal double magazine carrier for a faster reload (Galco)
- Silhouetted holster takes several barrel and slide lengths (Galco)
- 40 of the 42 reviews we could read recommend it
Cons
- Tight at first: four of the reviews we could read mention a snug fit or break-in, two of them with a wide Glock 21
- Setup takes time; reviewers mention the buttons, the assembly directions and getting a friend to help
- Galco says most fits are not compatible with red dot optics
- One reviewer found a 3.6 in M&P Compact slide left extra leather past the muzzle
Best for: a Glock 19 or similar compact or full-size pistol carried under a jacket all day, or while driving. Skip it if your carry pistol wears a red dot.

Most reviewed (the original Miami Classic): Galco Miami Classic Shoulder System, Right Hand, Black
Horizontal carry · card: MC224B, right hand, Black · the orderable row name names no gun; the retailer's Gun Model field for this row lists the Glock 19 among its fits · the listing sells 7 rows
around $210exact price on OpticsPlanet
The original Miami Classic, the most reviewed shoulder holster we found at the retailer and the design Galco says the II improves on. Galco's own guide calls it a direct descendant of the shoulder system the company first introduced in 1970, then as the Famous Jackass Leather Company. The retailer lists a premium steerhide holster and magazine carrier, medium-width harness straps, a full grain leather harness with a swiveling Flexalon back plate, a thumb break, and attachment points for tie-downs, a cuff case or a flashlight carrier; the box holds the holster, harness, ammo carrier and a set of system screws. Be careful with fit: the orderable name of the row we card, MC224B in black, names no gun at all. Its Glock 19 fit comes only from the retailer's Gun Model field for that row, so confirm your pistol on the listing before you order. All 73 reviews we could read recommend it; reviewers praise all-day comfort and easy adjustment. The trade-offs: three reviewers criticize plastic buttons or connectors, one of them replacing the buttons with metal screws, one says the new square buckles dig in, reviewers describe a tight break-in, and one says the choice of fits for railed pistols is thin.
Pros
- The most reviews of any pick here: 74 on the retailer listing
- All 73 reviews we could read recommend it
- Leather harness on a swiveling Flexalon back plate (retailer)
- Takes tie-downs, a cuff case or a flashlight carrier (retailer)
Cons
- Three reviewers criticize plastic buttons or connectors; one says the square buckles dig in
- The carded row's orderable name names no gun: its Glock 19 fit is only in the Gun Model field
- Tight at first: reviewers describe a break-in, one with a bagged Glock 19 left in the holster for days
- Needs an over-shirt or jacket to hide it, one reviewer notes
Best for: a buyer who wants the classic Galco horizontal rig for less than the II. Check that your exact pistol appears in the row's Gun Model list first.

Best for full-size pistols (diagonal carry): Galco Jackass Shoulder Rig, Glock 17
Diagonal, butt-down carry · card: JR224B, the row the retailer names for the Glock 17, right hand, Black · the listing sells 12 gun and hand rows
around $190exact price on OpticsPlanet
The rig for a longer pistol. The retailer lists a diagonal, butt-down carry, a premium steerhide holster and magazine carrier, a Premium Center Cut Steerhide harness with a swiveling Flexalon backplate, and attachment points for tie-downs, a cuff case or a flashlight carrier. Galco's guide says the Jackass holster adjusts to a more diagonal position than the Miami Classic or Miami Classic II, which lets smaller-statured carriers conceal larger guns. Reviewers agree: several carry full-size 1911s and Sig 226-type pistols on other rows of this listing and say the canted holster hides a long slide better than a horizontal rig. We card the right-hand black row whose orderable name is the Glock 17. Of the 62 distinct reviews we could read (one is posted twice), 60 recommend it. The costs: tie-downs are optional extras, and one reviewer notes the rig came without them; two reviewers say the thumb break strap was too short to snap, on a Sig P220R and a 1911 Officer's model; one calls the plastic joiner on the back flimsy; and one says the suede straps catch thin fabric and can cut into the shoulders.
Pros
- Diagonal, butt-down carry hides a longer slide (retailer, Galco guide, reviewers)
- Center Cut Steerhide harness on a swiveling Flexalon backplate (retailer)
- Takes tie-downs, a cuff case or a flashlight carrier (retailer)
- 60 of the 62 distinct reviews we could read recommend it
Cons
- Tie-downs are optional extras (Galco guide); one reviewer notes they did not come with the rig
- Two reviewers could not snap the thumb break on a hammer-fired Sig P220R or 1911 Officer's model
- One reviewer found the plastic joiner on the back flimsy
- Suede straps can catch thin fabric, one reviewer says
Best for: a full-size pistol, or a shorter wearer who wants to hide a bigger gun, when a level horizontal rig would print. Order the row for your exact pistol.

Best value horizontal rig: DeSantis New York Undercover Rig, Glock 19

The lowest-priced rig on this page and the one non-Galco horizontal rig here. The retailer's listing is thin: a leather holster with a thumb break, full size, for barrels of 3 to 5 in, made in the USA, and no feature list at all. Reviewers fill in the rest: the harness is fully adjustable, one reviewer with a Glock 27 had to add a hole to keep the holster level, and one reviewer says the magazine pouch can be worn horizontally or vertically. One reviewer bought it for a Glock 26, 19 and 17 and says it takes standard capacity Glock 17 magazines or smaller. We card the right-hand Tan row whose orderable name starts with the Glock 19. 9 of the 11 reviews we could read recommend it. The costs: a small record, one reviewer found the wide straps comfortable but visible under some jackets, a longtime DeSantis buyer says corners have been cut, and one reviewer who ordered a different row (for the S&W Governor) says the holster and magazine straps did not match the photos.
Pros
- The lowest price on this page
- The orderable row names the Glock 19 first
- Reviewers describe a fully adjustable harness that stays put without belt hooks
- Magazine pouch can be worn horizontally or vertically, one reviewer says
Cons
- A small record: 11 readable reviews, 9 recommend it
- Wide straps can show under some jackets, one reviewer says
- The retailer lists no features or harness details
- One reviewer who ordered the S&W Governor row says it did not match the photos
Best for: a Glock 19 or similar compact carrier who wants a horizontal rig for less than the Galco. Skip it if you want detailed maker specs before you buy.

Best vertical rig (small revolvers): Bianchi X15 Shoulder Holster, Size 1
Vertical carry · card: BZ-HT8-X15-12356 (MPN 1015610), Holster Size 1, right hand, Tan · this row lists S&W J-Frame revolvers, Ruger SP101, Charter Arms Undercover, Walther PP/PPK and Sig P230/P232 · the listing sells 10 size rows
around $180exact price on OpticsPlanet
The only vertical rig here: the gun rides vertically under your arm, held by a spring closure and a thumb break. The retailer lists a dual spring closure for retention, a leather-lined holster, a detachable retainer strap and a fully adjustable soft leather harness that adjusts to a 48 in chest. The listing is sold by Holster Size; we card Size 1, whose row lists small guns such as the S&W J-Frame revolvers (Models 36, 37, 60, 442, 640, 642, 649), the Ruger SP101, the Charter Arms Undercover, the Walther PP and PPK and the Sig P230 and P232. Reviewers like that one holster fits several guns, and a thin reviewer says vertical conceals better than horizontal for that build. It shares the lowest rating here (4.0/5) with the DeSantis and has the highest share of negative reviews: 12 of the 49 we could read are marked would not recommend. Three reviewers say the harness strap is too short or cut skimpy, two say it came with no instructions, one says the leather weave attachment pulled apart, and several could not fit their gun, including a Ruger SP101 and a Walther PPK named on this row, though they do not say which size they ordered.
Pros
- The only vertical rig on this page
- Dual spring closure plus a thumb break (retailer)
- Harness adjusts to a 48 in chest; leather-lined holster (retailer)
- Reviewers carry several guns in one holster
Cons
- Tied for the lowest rating here; 12 of the 49 reviews we could read are marked would not recommend
- Three reviewers say the harness strap is too short or cut skimpy
- Sizing is confusing: several reviewers could not fit their gun; order by Holster Size
- No magazine carrier listed, and two reviewers got no instructions
Best for: a snub-nose revolver or small pistol carried vertically under a coat, by a buyer willing to check the Holster Size chart. Skip it if you want a rig that works out of the box.

Best chest rig for scoped hunting revolvers: Galco Kodiak Hunter Shoulder Holster, Large Revolvers
Chest-style crossdraw · card: KH130H, right hand, Havana · this row lists large revolvers such as the Ruger Redhawk and Super Blackhawk (with or without scope), Colt Anaconda 8 in and S&W Model 29 and 629 N-Frame · the listing sells 3 rows
around $210exact price on OpticsPlanet
Not a concealment rig but a hunting one: it carries a big revolver across your chest, where reviewers say it carries comfortably for long periods. The retailer describes it as designed for scoped revolvers and also fitting unscoped ones, with a premium steerhide holster, chest-style crossdraw carry, a padded adjustable leather and nylon shoulder strap, an adjustable nylon torso strap and a retention strap with a glove-friendly polymer release tab, made in the USA. We card the right-hand Havana row, which lists large-frame revolvers from the Ruger Blackhawk, Redhawk, Super Blackhawk and Super Redhawk families (7.5 in, several with scope) to the Colt Anaconda 8 in and the S&W Model 29 (6 in) and 629 (8.375 in). 37 of the 39 reviews we could read recommend it; reviewers carry a scoped Redhawk, an Anaconda and a scoped S&W Model 28 for hunting and hiking. The costs: three reviewers describe stiff leather that is hard to draw from or to seat the barrel in at first, one says the front sight hangs up at the end of the holster, and one says it scuffed the end of a new Ruger's barrel.
Pros
- Designed for scoped revolvers, also fits unscoped ones (retailer)
- Glove-friendly polymer release tab on the retention strap (retailer)
- Carries a heavy revolver at the center of the torso, reviewers say
- 37 of the 39 reviews we could read recommend it
Cons
- Stiff at first: three reviewers found drawing or seating the barrel hard
- One reviewer says the front sight hangs up at the end of the holster
- One reviewer says it scuffed the end of the barrel
- One color (Havana) on the carded row, and not a concealment rig
Best for: a hunter with a large-frame or scoped revolver who wants it on the chest rather than the hip. Anyone carrying a pistol for concealment should pick a Galco horizontal rig instead.

Horizontal, diagonal, vertical or chest: which suits your gun
Built only from each listing's rows, the maker's notes and what reviewers carry. Always order the row for your exact gun and hand.

How to choose a shoulder holster
- Start with the gun. Each listing sells separate rows by gun, and a row name can list a dozen models or none. Match your exact pistol or revolver, barrel length and hand before you look at anything else. For a Glock 19 on the belt instead, see our best Glock 19 holster picks.
- Pick the angle. Horizontal for a compact or full-size pistol, diagonal for a longer slide or a smaller frame, vertical for a small revolver, chest for a big hunting revolver.
- Plan the cover garment. Reviewers wear these under a jacket, an open button-up shirt or a coat. One DeSantis reviewer found the wide straps showed under some jackets.
- Check for a red dot. Galco says most Miami Classic II fits are not compatible with red dot optics, and its guide marks optic-ready codes with an R in the suffix.
- Budget time for setup and break-in. Reviewers of the Miami Classic II, the Miami Classic and the Kodiak Hunter mention a tight fit at first. Follow the maker's break-in steps (see the FAQ), adjust the harness with a helper, and decide whether you want the optional tie-downs.
How we chose these
This is a research-based roundup, not a hands-on test. We started from the most reviewed shoulder holsters on the retailer's category grid (Galco Miami Classic, Jackass, Bianchi X15, Miami Classic II and Kodiak Hunter) and added the DeSantis New York Undercover, a horizontal rig from a second maker. For each listing we opened every row to find the new holster each card links to, noted its gun list, hand and color, and read every review we could, including every one that does not recommend the product. Maker facts come from Galco's own Miami Classic II page and Galco's printed guide for its horizontal shoulder systems; the rest is labelled as the retailer's. Claims we found only in secondary research, such as warranty terms, editorial awards and any history of the original design beyond Galco's own guide, were left out because we could not confirm them on Galco's own pages. Our scores are our opinion; ratings are shown attributed to the retailer that collected them. See our methodology for how we work.
FAQ
What is the best shoulder holster?
For most people carrying a compact or full-size pistol, the Galco Miami Classic II. Galco lists 1.5 in harness straps on a Flexalon swivel back plate and an open-front horizontal double magazine carrier, and OpticsPlanet shoppers rate it 4.7/5 across 44 reviews pooled over every version. The original Miami Classic has the most reviews, the Galco Jackass suits full-size pistols, and the DeSantis New York Undercover is the lowest-priced horizontal rig here.
Is a horizontal or vertical shoulder holster better?
It depends on the gun and your build. A horizontal rig such as the Miami Classic II holds a compact or full-size pistol level under the arm with spare magazines on the other side. A diagonal rig such as the Galco Jackass tilts the gun butt-down, which Galco says lets smaller-statured carriers conceal larger guns. A vertical rig such as the Bianchi X15 carries the gun vertically, and one thin reviewer says it conceals better for that build. For a large scoped hunting revolver, a chest rig such as the Galco Kodiak Hunter carries it across the torso.
Is there a Kydex shoulder holster on this list?
No. Every pick here is leather: when we checked (September 2026), a search of the retailer we link to returned no Kydex shoulder holsters. Leather needs a break-in period: reviewers of the Miami Classic II, the Miami Classic and the Kodiak Hunter mention a tight fit at first.
How do you break in a leather shoulder holster?
Galco's instructions for its horizontal shoulder systems: put the unloaded gun in a heavy duty zipper bag or two to three layers of plastic kitchen wrap, leaving the grip uncovered, seat it slowly in the holster, twist it about 1/16 in each way 6 to 12 times, leave it for about 15 minutes, then remove the wrap and try the bare gun. Repeat if it is still too tight. Galco says to stretch a retention strap with your fingers only.
Will a shoulder holster fit a pistol with a red dot?
Usually not the Galco rigs here. Galco says most Miami Classic II fits are not compatible with red dot optics, and its guide says codes with the letter R in the suffix accommodate most red dot sights. Reading the part numbers of the Galco rows carded here (MCII224, MC224B, JR224B, KH130H), none has an R in the suffix; the R in JR224B is in the model prefix. So check the listing for an optic-ready row before you buy.
Do shoulder holsters need tie-downs?
No. Galco's guide calls tie-downs optional items that anchor the shoulder system to your belt, used as a matter of personal preference. One Jackass reviewer notes the rig came without them, while a DeSantis reviewer says that rig stays in place without belt hooks.
