Holosun 407C X2 vs X3: what actually changed?
Our verdict: the X3 is the same 407C with a longer-running battery and more night-vision settings. Buy the HS407C-X2 (around $190) if you shoot in daylight and want the proven model with 145 owner reviews behind it. Buy the HS407C-X3 (around $240) if you run night vision or want double the rated battery life, and are happy to pay about $54 more for a model with only a handful of reviews so far.
On Holosun's own spec sheets the X3 rates 100,000 hours at setting 6 against 50,000, splits its brightness 8 daylight / 4 night vision against 10 / 2, and grows the window from 0.91 x 0.63 in to 0.91 x 0.67 in. Footprint, battery, dot, clicks and sealing are unchanged. Confirm the current price on the retailer page.
How this comparison was made: a research-based comparison built from Holosun's own spec tables for both sights, read side by side, plus the retailer's listings and owner reviews. We have not bench-tested these two. Every spec row below appears on both of Holosun's tables; nothing is filled in from one sight to the other. Verdicts are our editorial opinion. What the X3 changed
- Battery life doubles on paper. Holosun rates the X3 at 100,000 hours on brightness setting 6 and the X2 at 50,000. That is about 11.4 years of continuous runtime against about 5.7. Both have Shake Awake, which sleeps the dot when the gun is still, so neither is on that long in real carry. The practical gain is fewer battery changes, not a dot that dies sooner on the X2.
- More night-vision settings. Both have 12 brightness settings, split differently. The X2 gives 10 daylight and 2 night vision; the X3 gives 8 daylight and 4 night vision. If you run a pistol under NV, the X3 gives you twice the settings to match your tube. If you never do, you have traded two daylight steps for settings you will not use.
- A slightly larger window. The window grows from 0.91 x 0.63 in to 0.91 x 0.67 in, about 6 percent more glass area. That is a real change but a small one; it does not move the 407C into the large-window class.
- A touch heavier. 1.55 oz against 1.5 oz, and Holosun lists the body at 1.78 x 1.32 x 1.1 in against 1.78 x 1.15 x 1.15 in.
What did not change
The part that decides whether a 407C fits your gun is identical. Both mount directly on the RMR footprint, both take a CR1632 in a side tray you can reach without pulling the optic, both put a 2 MOA red dot behind 1 MOA clicks with ±30 MOA of travel, and both are rated IP67 and 5000G. Holosun describes the X3 as having a "reinforced" 7075-T6 housing, but both spec sheets list the same 7075 T6 aluminum and the same sealing and vibration ratings, and Holosun does not say what was reinforced. So a slide cut or RMR plate that takes an X2 takes an X3. The body dimensions do differ (see the table), so if you carry in an optic-cut holster, check its clearance for the X3 before assuming it carries over.
Which one to buy
- Buy the X2 if you shoot in daylight, want the cheaper sight, or want to buy on evidence: 145 owner reviews averaging 4.8/5 is a deep record for a pistol dot.
- Buy the X3 if you run night vision, want double the X2's rated battery life, or want the current model. Know that its owner record is three reviews so far, two of them from the same reviewer, which is too few to say anything about long-term reliability.
- Want green? Both come in green: the X2 as the HE407C-GR X2 and the X3 as the HE407C-X3-GR. The X3 also comes in a gold dot.
"This is my first optic for a pistol and I put it on my CZ P10C. The dot is very crisp, controls are easy, and I like the solar panel on top. Can't beat the battery life too. Highly recommend."

Deciding on the reticle instead? If the choice is really between a plain dot and a circle, see our Holosun 407C vs 507C comparison, which covers the X2 generation of both. Carrying a sub-compact pistol? The C body uses an RMR footprint that a P365 or Glock 43X slide is not cut for; our Holosun 407K vs 507K decoder covers the K bodies that are.
FAQ
What is the difference between the Holosun 407C X2 and X3?
Four things on Holosun's own spec sheets. The X3 doubles the rated battery life at brightness setting 6, from 50,000 to 100,000 hours. It splits its 12 brightness settings as 8 daylight and 4 night vision, where the X2 has 10 daylight and 2 night vision. Its window grows from 0.91 x 0.63 in to 0.91 x 0.67 in. And it weighs 1.55 oz against 1.5 oz. The 2 MOA dot, RMR footprint, CR1632 side battery tray, 1 MOA clicks, IP67 sealing and 7075-T6 housing are the same.
Is the Holosun 407C X3 worth the extra money over the X2?
For most daytime pistol shooters, no. The X2 already rates about 50,000 hours on setting 6, which is several years of continuous runtime, and its shake-awake means the dot is rarely on that long. The X3 earns its premium if you run night vision and want more NV settings, or if you want the newest model. The X3 also has a much thinner owner record so far, three reviews on OpticsPlanet against 145 for the X2.
Do the 407C X2 and X3 use the same mount and battery?
Yes. Holosun lists the RMR footprint as the direct mount for both, so they fit the same RMR-cut slides and the same RMR plates and AR mounts. Both take a CR1632 battery in a side-loading tray, so you can change it without removing the optic and losing zero.
Is the 407C X3 housing stronger than the X2?
Holosun describes the X3 as refining the 407C platform with a reinforced 7075-T6 aluminum housing. Both spec sheets list the same material, 7075 T6 aluminum, and both list IP67 sealing and 5000G vibration resistance. Holosun does not say what was reinforced, so we cannot tell you how much tougher the X3 is, only that the published ratings are identical.
Does the 407C X3 come in green?
Yes. OpticsPlanet sells the X3 in three dot colors: red (HS407C-X3-RD), green (HE407C-X3-GR) and gold (HS407C-X3-GD), with the green costing a little more than the red and gold. The X2 is also sold in green as the HE407C-GR X2.
