The best 9mm range ammo
Quick answer: Magtech 9mm 115 grain FMJ (around $15 for 50 rounds) is the best 9mm range ammo for most people. It sits at the low end of the box prices of the three loads we compared, Magtech publishes full ballistics for it (1135 fps from a 4 inch test barrel), and none of the 64 reviews in the retailer listing's main list is below four stars. For the deepest owner record, the Winchester USA 115 grain FMJ (around $15 for 50) has 155 reviews on OpticsPlanet, though two owners reported misfires in 2023. If you reload, CCI Blazer Brass 115 grain is the one whose maker states the brass is reloadable, with standard boxer-type primers, at the highest box price of the three. All three are 115 grain full metal jacket in 50 round boxes.
Range ammo is often bought in bulk, so small differences in box price add up, and reliability in your own pistol matters more than a few feet per second. Every card below names the exact box we checked and how many rounds are in it. Ballistic figures come from the maker's own page where the maker publishes them, and are labelled as the retailer's where we could not find one. Full metal jacket is for practice; for carry, see our best 9mm self defense ammo guide, which compares hollow points. Laws on buying and shipping ammunition vary: check your state and local law.

Magtech's velocity is from a 4 inch test barrel; CCI's page gives no barrel length and the retailer lists 4 inches; Winchester's figure is the retailer's. Your barrel length changes the number. Owner ratings are OpticsPlanet's, shown with the number of reviews. All three boxes hold 50 rounds, so the box price comparison is also the cost per round comparison. Prices are bands for one box; confirm the current price and availability on the retailer page before you buy.

Best 9mm range ammo overall: Magtech 9mm 115 gr FMJ
9mm Luger · 115 gr full metal jacket · 1135 fps and 329 ft-lb from a 4 in test barrel (Magtech) · brass case · 50 rounds per box · card: 9A
around $15exact price on OpticsPlanet
A low box price, close to the Winchester, and the cleanest owner record. Magtech calls full metal jacket the ideal choice for training, target shooting and general range use, and it publishes full ballistics for this exact box: 1135 fps and 329 ft-lb at the muzzle from a 4 in test barrel, 1034 fps at 50 yards and 963 fps at 100 yards, with a brass case and a small pistol primer. The retailer's spec table matches the muzzle figures. Owners rate it 4.8 out of 5 from 66 reviews, and none of the 64 reviews in the listing's main list is below four stars. Owners report it running in Glock, Canik, Hellcat, SIG and Taurus pistols and in PCCs, and one owner uses it in a 1937 Luger. The complaints are mild: one owner finds it a bit dirty, another gets better accuracy with hollow points.
Pros
- Among the lowest box prices here for the same 50 rounds
- None of the 64 reviews in the main list is below four stars
- Full maker ballistics for this box, out to 100 yards (Magtech)
- Owners report it running in Glock, Canik, SIG and Taurus pistols and in PCCs
Cons
- One owner calls it "A bit on the dirty side, similar to Aguila, but dependable"
- One owner writes "I do get better accuracy with hollow points."
- Fewer owner reviews than the Winchester: 66 against 155 on OpticsPlanet
- Not flawless: one owner reports "only had one light strike out of 150 rounds"
Best for: most people buying practice ammo for a 9mm pistol or PCC who want a proven load at a low box price.

Most reviewed range load: Winchester USA Handgun 9mm 115 gr FMJ
9mm Luger · 115 gr full metal jacket · 1190 fps, 362 ft-lb (retailer listing) · brass case · 50 rounds per box · card: W9MM50
around $15exact price on OpticsPlanet
The most reviewed load on this page. Owners rate it 4.8 out of 5 from 155 reviews; of the 153 in the listing's main list, 129 are five stars and one is two stars. Owners report it running in HK, SIG, Glock, Beretta and Smith and Wesson pistols. The retailer lists 1190 fps and 362 ft-lb; we could not read those figures on a Winchester product page, so they are the retailer's. Winchester answered a shopper on the listing that the load can be used through a ported barrel. The weak spots are in the same reviews. Two owners in early 2023 reported rounds that would not fire (one of them about 30 percent, from 100 round boxes on this listing), a third owner in 2024 mentions a couple of misfires, and three reviews we read describe it as dirty, smoky or dirtier than other brands, although the listing names reduced barrel fouling as a feature. Winchester's 2021 recall notice does not list this box's symbol, W9MM50, but it does list the 100 and 200 round boxes sold on the same listing; see the note below the picks.
Pros
- The most reviewed load on this page, 4.8/5 from 155 reviews
- 129 of the 153 reviews in the main list are five stars
- Winchester says on the retailer listing it can be used through a ported barrel
- Close to the lowest box price here for 50 rounds
Cons
- Two owners in 2023 reported misfires; one found "about 30% of the rounds failed to fire"
- Three reviews we read describe it as dirty or smoky; one owner writes "Found this ammo to shoot a bit Smokey and dirty."
- Ballistic figures are the retailer's; we found no Winchester product page publishing them
- Winchester's 2021 recall notice lists the 100 and 200 round boxes on this listing (not this 50 round box); check lot numbers on older boxes
Best for: shooters who want the load with the deepest owner record here, and who will check the lot number on any older Winchester 9mm they already own.

Reloadable brass, stated by the maker: CCI Blazer Brass 9mm 115 gr FMJ
9mm Luger · 115 gr full metal jacket · 1145 fps, 335 ft-lb (CCI) · reloadable brass, boxer primer · 50 rounds per box · card: 5200
around $20exact price on OpticsPlanet
The one whose maker says outright that its brass is built for reloading. CCI says Blazer Brass uses reloadable brass cases, quality primers and clean-burning propellants, and that its standard boxer-type primers and primer pockets make reloading easy. CCI lists 1145 fps and 335 ft-lb at the muzzle, and 994 fps at 100 yards. Owners rate it 4.7 out of 5 from 57 reviews, and several call it their go-to range ammo; one calls it the industry standard. It also draws pointed complaints: one owner could not cycle a full magazine across two pistols, and another reports jams in two guns. It is also the highest box price here, and CCI's own product page says not to use it in firearms with ported barrels or a ported recoil compensator.
Pros
- Reloadable brass with standard boxer-type primers (CCI)
- Maker ballistics for this box: 1145 fps and 335 ft-lb (CCI)
- Several owners call it their go-to range load; 46 of the 55 reviews in the main list are five stars
- Owners report it running in Smith and Wesson M&P and SIG pistols
Cons
- One owner writes "Could not cycle an entire magazine without multiple problems."
- Another owner reports "guns jammed every shot in two different guns"
- The highest box price of the three for the same 50 rounds
- CCI says not to use it in firearms with ported barrels or a ported recoil compensator
Best for: shooters who reload their own brass and a non-ported pistol. Run a few boxes through your own gun before buying in bulk.

A note on the Winchester 2021 recall notice
Winchester published a product warning and recall notice (Revision 1, dated August 6, 2021) for specific lots of its 9mm Luger 115 grain FMJ and JHP pistol ammunition. W9MM50, the 50 round box on our card, is not one of the symbols it lists. The same retailer listing also sells 100 and 200 round boxes, USA9MMVP and USA9W, and those symbols are on the list. The notice covers only the listed lot numbers, and Winchester says ammunition of those symbols purchased before March 25, 2021 is not subject to it. We have no information that current boxes are affected. If you have older Winchester 9mm, check the lot number printed on the carton against Winchester's recall notice on its website, or contact Winchester.
How to choose 9mm range ammo
- Reliability in your pistol comes first. Most owners of all three report no problems, but each load has owners who did. Buy a box or two and run them through your own gun and magazines before you buy by the case.
- Compare cost per round, not box price. Boxes come in different counts across brands. The three here all hold 50 rounds, so their box prices compare directly.
- Bullet weight. All three loads here are 115 grain. The defensive loads on our hollow point page run from 115 to 147 grain.
- Brass if you reload. All three use brass cases. CCI states outright that its brass is reloadable with standard boxer-type primers.
- Ported barrels and compensators. Read the maker's warnings. CCI says not to use Blazer Brass with ported barrels or a ported recoil compensator.
- Cleanliness. Owners disagree: some call each of these loads clean, some call Winchester and Magtech dirty. Expect to clean after a long range day either way.
- Carry ammo is different. FMJ is for practice. For a carry load, see our best 9mm self defense ammo guide.
- The law. Rules on buying and shipping ammunition vary by state and locality. Check your state and local law before you buy.
How we chose these
This is a research-based roundup, not a hands-on test. We started from the retailer's 9mm Luger ammunition category sorted by most reviews and took the full metal jacket range loads with the deepest owner records. For each load we opened the full model list to card the 50 round box the listing fronts, and read the owner reviews in the export, including every critical one. We checked the ballistics against Magtech's and CCI's own product pages. We could not find a Winchester product page publishing ballistics for this load, so those figures are labelled as the retailer's. Our scores are our opinion; owner ratings are shown attributed to the retailer that collected them. See our methodology for how we work.
FAQ
What is the best 9mm range ammo?
For most people, Magtech 9mm 115 grain FMJ. It shares the low end of the box prices on this page for the same 50 rounds, Magtech publishes full ballistics for it (1135 fps from a 4 inch test barrel), and none of the 64 reviews in the retailer listing's main list is below four stars. Winchester USA 115 grain FMJ is the most reviewed, with 155 reviews on OpticsPlanet. CCI Blazer Brass is the one whose maker states its brass is reloadable.
Is FMJ or hollow point better for practice?
Full metal jacket (FMJ) is the usual range round: all three loads here are FMJ and cost far less per round than premium defensive hollow points. For carry, people use a jacketed hollow point, and it pays to fire enough of your carry load too before you trust it. Our best 9mm self defense ammo guide compares hollow points.
Which 9mm range ammo is cheapest per round?
All three boxes on this page hold 50 rounds, so the box price decides it. The Magtech and Winchester sit close together at the low end, and the CCI Blazer Brass is the highest. Divide the current box price on the retailer page by 50 for the exact cost per round.
Can I use this ammo in a ported barrel or compensator?
Check with the maker for your load. CCI's product page says not to use Blazer Brass in firearms with ported barrels or a ported recoil compensator. Winchester answered a shopper on the retailer listing that its USA 115 grain FMJ can be used through a ported barrel. We found no statement either way from Magtech.
Is the Winchester USA 9mm FMJ recalled?
Winchester published a product warning and recall notice (Revision 1, dated August 6, 2021) for specific lots of its 9mm Luger 115 grain FMJ and JHP ammunition. The 50 round box on this page, W9MM50, is not one of the symbols it lists, but the 100 and 200 round boxes sold on the same retailer listing (USA9MMVP and USA9W) are. The notice applies only to the listed lot numbers, and Winchester says ammunition of those symbols purchased before March 25, 2021 is not subject to it. If you have older boxes, check the lot number printed on the carton against Winchester's recall notice or contact Winchester.
